Full-day, face to face course in Birmingham

A full day course, that will help you to develop your planning in D&T and create quality lessons and units. You will cover how to contextualise learning and develop rich opportunities for your pupils. The session will additionally highlight best practices, using acclaimed D&T planning resource 'Projects on a Page'.  There are 21 planners that cover Food and Nutrition, Textiles, Structures, Mechanisms, Electronics and Programming and Control. It is a flexible scheme of work for D&T that helps schools to deliver a breath of excellent primary design and technology.

Course objectives:

  • Understand how Projects on a Page can be used to tailor D&T at your primary school and to best meet the needs of your pupils
  • Understand how to contextualise learning and develop rich opportunities for pupils, avoiding a ‘making by numbers’ approach of D&T teaching
  • Gain skills in using Projects on a Page to plan your curriculum, add context and plan a sequence of lessons
  • Share ideas to make projects and lessons engaging, and to ensure coverage of the 6 D&T Principles
  • Break down the contents of one or more POAP units, then engage in hands-on examples and develop practical skills

By participating in this course, you will learn how to:

  • Use Projects on a Page as a planning tool
  • Use Projects on a Page to develop a sequence of lessons
  • Learn how POAP can address the key design skills of design, make, and evaluate
  • Ensure content coverage and progression through the key stages
  • Contextualise learning
  • Ensure the D&T ‘key content’ is being delivered
  • Plan engaging lessons with a variety of learning opportunities
  • Create practical outcomes using Projects on a Page templates
  • Create a sequence of lessons following the templates

Meet your Trainer

Paul Woodward – Curriculum Consultant

Paul has been teaching D&T for almost 30 years with most of those years as a Head of Creative Arts Faculties or as Head of D&T. Following a degree in 3D design, Paul initially trained for the Post 16 sector, so he has extensive experience of teaching A Level D&T, but he has taught the subject from KS2 onwards in a wide variety of schools ranging from Pupil Referral Units to Prestigious International Boarding schools. Paul’s MA is in Education specialising in Professional Development in Teaching and Learning which led to him working as a consultant, course designer and presenter for D&TA alongside his industry and teaching roles…
