This unit is based around the issue of providing light for people in developing countries who do not have access to mains electricity as an example of a possible career path that D&T might lead to. Light up the World, a humanitarian organisation based at the University of Calgary, is used throughout the project as an example of this type of work in action in the real world. Pupils are given a design brief and are required to investigate the context and key people, to design and manufacture a sustainable lighting system and to write/present a technical project report similar to that produced by Electrical and Electrical Engineers in industry. There are report guidelines and template, teacher notes and there is plenty of advice for pupils in the PowerPoint presentation. The resource also includes information about careers and links to a number of websites and further useful resources.
Different schools operate different timetables so activities here have not been broken into specific lessons but instead presented as 12 activities for the individual teacher to adapt to his/her school and classes.
STEM Careers is a series of resources whose aim is to raise awareness of the wide range of careers that Design and Technology can lead to within a creative Design and Technology curriculum context.
