Programming Challenge
Age 11-14 years
First published 2014
This project offers an introduction to microcontrollers for students in Year 8, using a series of programming challenges, progressing from using flashing LEDs and musical chimes to an alarm system. The resource looks at the use of microcontrollers in a range of products, considering the advantages and how input – process – output works in electronic systems in a variety of applications. Students will program PIC microcontrollers using flowchart commands using Logicator software, and learning about the theory of electric components and Ohm’s Law. The students will also develop concept designs for a future product. Teachers can chose whether to buy basic PIC boards or make them up using the included instructions.
The resource includes instructional videos, helpsheets, programming challenge outlines, teacher and student PowerPoint presentations, PIC board construction files and instructions, homework outlines, and a programming helpsheet. The scheme has plans for nine lessons, including extension activities and there are also links to online resources and inspirational videos through a shared, downloadable Prezzi presentation.
