In this project children explore how fabrics can be joined together to make a picnic blanket of their own for a teddy bears’ picnic. It starts from the traditional story but introduces a twist as Goldilocks revisits the three bears’ house and they become friends. The story is included on a Word file for teachers to use or adapt to make their own. Activities include investigating different fabrics and thinking about their properties; where textiles come from, starting from the raw materials and showing a finished product. A skills sheet is given to support ways of joining textiles, if children want to do a patchwork or appliqué blanket, and weaving using different fabrics and threads. If the children design and make the blanket a sheet is provided to help them make choices from a range of fabrics given to them and sheets on which they can clarify their thoughts about their design. A vocabulary list gives a point for technical vocabulary that should prove useful for this project.
Some of the activities such as investigating fabrics can be adapted as part of a different topic e.g. a coat for… or a new dress for Cinderella or to undertake a variety of activities leading to designing and making the picnic blanket.
