In this unit Year 3/4 children learn how containers are designed for specific purposes. They consider how the shape of the container will meet the needs of the product, which it will hold. Through it they will develop mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding when they draw and make nets of 3D shapes. They will develop their design skills when considering the shape of the container for practical and aesthetic reasons, and develop ideas by making initial designs in paper and evaluating the product for suitability on both practical and aesthetic grounds.
This unit could be used for a particular event thus giving it ‘authenticity’ e.g. a Christmas Bazaar where children make and bake biscuits and/or cakes to sell at the event to raise money, or Gift Boxes in which children make gifts and design and make the box to hold these.
The resource contains a full unit of work, describing the project and activities; a helpsheet, children’s worksheets, and two maths games looking at symmetry and construction 3D shapes.
