Through this unit of work children learn about the wide variety of different ingredients available to design and make their own salads. They learn about healthy eating through a balanced diet and ways of preparing and combining their salad ingredients.
The resource has a comprehensive scheme of work and supporting helpsheet, covering IDEAs, FPTs and DMAs as well as suggested homework activities and teacher tips. There is also lesson plan, published in D&T Primary, outlining how to use the resources and such things as safe food preparation. These are supported by two posters for classroom display and PowerPoint presentations: Name that salad, Sort the salad and What would you put in your salad? Another presentation takes children through making a Niçoise salad in easy steps as inspiration for designing and making their own. There are worksheets covering planning, ensuring the salad has varied ingredients, identifying salads from around the world and evaluating salads in terms of appearance, taste, smell etc.
