This Year 3 or 4 PowerPoint presentation, from material kindly provided by Hampshire County Council, introduces children to a range of switches and sensors, then continues to look at using computer control when designing and making alarms. The resource looks at four different types of switch and includes an example of using microswitches in developing a simple alarm to alert people when a treasure box is removed. The second part covers setting up different switches to use with a Flowglo control box, then a step-by-step look at computer control using Flowol software to activate the alarm under certain conditions, using either a light or buzzer as output. There are sample challenges to design and make an alarm system which alerts when a charity collection box is removed, to prevent paintings being removed from walls, to keep a money box secure, to protect windows and doors from burglars, and to sound an alarm when a tower tilts over at a dangerous angle.
The PowerPoint should be used in conjunction with other teaching on electrical circuits and components, and can be adapted to use as classroom display material as well as being instructional.
