In this children research the variety of fruits available and the importance of fruit and vegetables in a balanced diet. During the unit children will learn about other cultures and their food. This unit is based on a Geography topic about St. Lucia, an island in the Windward group of Caribbean islands. It could easily be adapted to any island or to a different type of geographical area. The children investigate products and evaluate the nutritional value on labels, especially on fruit juices and smoothies. They are encouraged to think carefully about the target audience for their new product.
The resource contains a PowerPoint presentation looking at St. Lucia with background information about the island and fruits grown there, and a step by step guide to preparing and blending the fruit. It also has an evaluation sheet, a worksheet, questionnaire and teachers’ planning.
