This is a textiles unit of work in which children make an interesting small bag with a self closing top. The flexible plastic strips needed to give the bag its bendy properties can be cut from surplus polypropylene document folders, thus bringing a recycling element into the project. Having decided what their bag is to be used for children will think about what size it will need to be and what fabric will be appropriate. They will learn and use textile skills such as making a paper pattern (template) to meet their own requirements, cutting around the pattern and using simple stitching techniques. The basic bag can be very simple and is clearly outlined in the PowerPoint. It will be suitable for younger children and those with special needs. However various suggestions will be made as to how the work could be extended to give sufficient challenge for older or more able children.
The resource contains a step-by-step PowerPoint slideshow, a scheme of work and Bendy Bag worksheets including prompts for deciding on user and purpose, selecting materials and a tick list of jobs.
