The Sustainable Design Studio has launched an exciting new competition for Design & Technology students, offering schools the chance to win a revolutionary 3D printing filament maker! Open exclusively to D&T Association members, this initiative encourages Key Stage 3 and 4 students to showcase their creativity and innovation while promoting sustainability. If you are a member of the D&T Association, this is your chance to get involved!
Transforming Waste into Opportunity
Imagine turning plastic bottles and other waste materials into usable 3D printing filament—reducing costs while making a real impact on sustainability. The winning school will receive a cutting-edge filament maker, empowering students to explore environmentally friendly design solutions.
Who Can Enter?
This competition is open to Key Stage 3 and 4 students, with submissions made by a teacher on behalf of their class.
How to Enter
Teachers are invited to submit a recent or ongoing project—there’s no need to start from scratch! Each entry must include:
A Written Brief (max 500 words): An overview of the project, its purpose, target user, design considerations, and how 3D printing was incorporated. Sustainability aspects should be highlighted if relevant.
Supporting Evidence: Images and/or video footage showcasing key design elements, with a clear focus on 3D-printed components.
The Final Product: The completed design must incorporate 3D-printed elements or be entirely 3D printed.
Judging Criteria
Entries will be evaluated based on:

Creativity & Innovation – How original and inventive is the project?

Use of 3D Printing – How effectively is 3D printing integrated into the design?

Design Process & Development – Evidence of problem-solving, iteration, and refinement.

Sustainability Considerations – How does the project address material use and waste reduction?
Please Note: Teachers must be D&T Association members to submit an entry. If you’re not yet a member, consider joining to take part!
Exciting Prizes Up for Grabs!
Winner: The winning school will receive a 3D printing filament maker—turning waste plastic into usable filament, making 3D printing more cost-effective and eco-friendly.
Runners-Up: Selected runners-up will be featured in a video showcase, highlighting their creative and innovative work.
Publication Feature: Both the winner and runners-up will be showcased in D&T Practice or Designing Magazine, published in September 2025.

How to Submit Your Entry
Teachers should send their entries via email to membership@designtechnology.org.uk. By submitting, you grant permission for images and videos to be used in marketing and D&T publications.
