Recently, I had the privilege of attending a remarkable course hosted by the Design & Technology Association, the "Three-day Intensive D&T Training for Non-Specialists." As a new team member, I was particularly curious to gain firsthand knowledge about the courses we run, and this one specifically aimed at non-specialists, seemed like the perfect opportunity to dive in. What I experienced over those three days was not just a learning journey, but an inspiring exploration of the world of design and technology.

Diverse Attendees and Shared Challenges

The course brought together eight enthusiastic teachers from various secondary schools. Each participant had a different level of familiarity with D&T, but they all shared the same goal: to sharpen their skills and bring fresh ideas back to their schools. Listening to their stories was both enlightening and humbling. Many teachers spoke about the lack of funding and resources that often stifles their ability to deliver a comprehensive D&T curriculum. However, there was one fortunate teacher from a school that highly praised and supported D&T. Her experiences highlighted the disparities in D&T education and underscored the need for better funding and recognition of this crucial subject.

Expert Guidance from Lol Conway

The course was led by the one of our expert trainers, Lol Conway, who brought her wealth of knowledge and 13 years of teaching experience to the table. From the moment she started, it was clear that Lol's expertise and passion for D&T were unparalleled. Her ability to blend theory with practical application made the course not only informative but also incredibly engaging. Her insights into the National Curriculum and how to create a robust D&T program were invaluable, and her enthusiasm was contagious.

Course Breakdown and Key Learnings

The course was meticulously structured over three days, each packed with valuable information and hands-on activities.

Day 1: D&T in Context
We began with an overview of D&T, its context, and purpose. Lol guided us through the National Curriculum, helping us understand its requirements and how they serve as a foundation for a broader curriculum. We delved into key content and skills, exploring systems and processes, and had our first hands-on experience working with materials like timbers and polymers.

Day 2: Design Thinking and Contextual Approaches
The second day focused on design thinking and contextual approaches to design. This session was particularly engaging, as we discussed how to manage NEA (Non-Exam Assessment) and theory content at exam levels. We continued our practical sessions, this time working with textiles, electronics, and modelling materials. These activities not only enhanced our technical skills but also sparked creativity and innovation.

Day 3: Curriculum Planning and Progression
The final day was dedicated to long, mid, and short-term curriculum planning. We learned how to ensure progression in learning and how to fit D&T into an already crowded curriculum. Lol emphasised the importance of common processes, tools, and machinery, and we explored systems and control along with CAM.

Course Objectives and Outcomes

The course had several key objectives, all of which were met with great success:

  • Understanding the National Curriculum requirements and using them as a starting point for a wider curriculum.
  • Developing a vision for D&T in our schools.
  • Planning for progression, stretch, and challenge.
  • Fitting D&T into a crowded curriculum.
  • Identifying and planning for the resources needed to support curriculum.
  • Ensuring curriculum is fit for future learning and employment.
  • Gaining confidence in specialised processes.

By the end of the course, we had a greater understanding of how D&T fits into the school curriculum, the design thinking that underpins the subject, and how to plan a 5 or 7 year curriculum. We also developed confidence in using CAD, CAM, and various materials and processes.

Final Thoughts

Attending the Three-Day Intensive D&T Training for Non-Specialists was an eye-opening and empowering experience. As a new team member, this course provided me with invaluable insights into the type of training our organisation offers and confirmed the significant impact we can have on D&T education. Not only did I gain practical skills and knowledge, but I also developed a deeper appreciation for the challenges and triumphs faced by D&T teachers.

We are thrilled to share some of the fantastic feedback we received from our delegates. One participant expressed appreciation for our support and interest, highlighting the excellent lunches and plentiful drinks, especially the great coffee. Another attendee described the course as a lovely experience, while a third delegate extended a heartfelt "Big Thank You" to everyone involved, praising the course for its wealth of knowledge, creativity, and delicious food. Our staff's attention to dietary requirements and their efforts to ensure everyone's happiness did not go unnoticed, adding to the overall positive experience.
