New Resource: Build the Change
Published 9th January 2025
The Design & Technology Association, in collaboration with Barefoot Computing, is excited to announce the launch of ‘Build the Change’ - an inspiring resource for teachers to use in the classroom. The free resource is aimed at students aged 7-11 and sets the challenge to design and create inclusive and sustainable 3D building models for local communities. It blends hands-on creativity with digital skills using Scratch programming to encourage environmental awareness and computational thinking in the classroom.
Key Features of Build the Change:
Curriculum Links: D&T and Computing.
Computer Science Concepts: Programming, Repetition.
Computational Thinking Approaches: Creating, Collaborating, Debugging.
Overview of Lessons
Lesson 1 (D&T): Explore sustainability and inclusivity, research designs, and create initial building concepts.
Lesson 2 (D&T): Learn about frame structures and evaluate design ideas.
Lesson 3 (D&T): Refine building designs and share with peers.
Lesson 4 (Computing): Investigate programming with repetition in Scratch using the PRIMM approach.
Lesson 5 (Computing): Animate building models in Scratch using digital photography and programming.
Lesson 6 (Computing): Finalise animations and provide peer feedback.
Curriculum Alignment
This resource aligns with KS2 design and technology and computing objectives by encouraging students to design functional and innovative products, develop tools and materials to address practical challenges, and write and debug programs that utilise repetition and sequence.
