New pound coin designed by student in Design & Technology
Published 7th April 2017
Congratulations to a student from Queen Mary's Grammar School, Walsall David Pearce who submitted the winning design for the new £1 coin.
The competition was a national competition open to adults and school children, so it's fantastic news that it was won by Design and Technology student. Over 6,500 entries were received across the country, 400 of which came from Queen Mary's Grammar School.
The Design and Technology Department ran the initiative almost 2 years ago where students were challenged to design the back of the 12 sided new £1 coin, one of the requirements of which was to represent England, Ireland, Scotland & Wales.
David's design has the English Tudor rose, Welsh leek, Irish Shamrock and Scottish Thistle all emerging from a single stem from the Queen's crown.
