Foster + Partners leads Trailblazer Group to launch new Model Maker Apprenticeship

Foster + Partners has chaired a Trailblazer Group to develop the UK’s first Model Maker Apprenticeship Standard, in collaboration with a range of creative companies, universities, and the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE).
Approved in July, the three-year programme is a level 6 qualification, which is equivalent to a bachelor's degree. Apprentices will have the opportunity to learn modelmaking in a workplace environment, with additional training provided by an associated university. They are exempt from paying tuition fees and receive a salary, as well as other employee related benefits.
The apprenticeships have been set up to improve the link between creative companies and academia, while also contributing to improving diversity in the profession. The approval of the scheme demonstrates how the industry can work together to make a positive contribution in its development.
Once the universities have developed courses, based on the approved Standard, then any company in the country will be able to employ a Model Maker Apprentice.

Developing the new Modelmaking Apprenticeship was the natural next step, allowing candidates to learn the skills they need to succeed from within this specialist industry.”

With an apprenticeship, you can dive straight into this exciting and varied industry, gaining practical experience and skills that set you apart—all without the need for a university degree.”
Claire Holman, Senior Lecturer of BA(Hons) Modelmaking at Arts University Bournemouth, said: “Professional model makers possess unique and specialised knowledge and skills, which align perfectly with the apprenticeship ethos of working and learning concurrently. The contribution of apprenticeships to the modelmaking workforce will enhance and broaden the industry's pool of talented makers.”
