Focused Tasks

FTs are where students are taught specific technical knowledge, designing skills and making skills. This may be a quick whole-class making activity, learning a new CAD programme, exploring polymers, or much more.

Thick and thin line sketching - in this Focused Task students will learn how to use different line weights to add impact to their sketches. With worksheets to print / use also.

Braille products - design and make your own braille adaptations for gardening products.

Adapted designs - this unit looks at how you can adapt existing products rather than designing from scratch. With printable card activity.

User experience - this Focused Task helps students understand and identify with the user, with a particular focus on empathising with those who have impairments such as loss of tactile sensation, hearing impairment and more. This can be done through a set of suggested DIY simulations to put yourself in their shoes temporarily.

Investigative Evaluative Activities

IEAs are where students learn from a range of existing products and find out about D&T in the wider world. This may be aspects such as product disassembly, reflection and prediction and discussions and explorations regarding sustainability.

Inclusive design – opportunities to explore and investigate how inclusive products are, looking at user needs.
